10/20; Yes on Prop 8-ers- READ!

October 21, 2008

I still fail to see how this effects you at all. “Protecting the values of marriage,” my ass. How is any of this any different than the civil rights movement? The “separate but equal” bathrooms fifty years ago? It’s still denying your fellow human being of god-given rights.

How can you deny your fellow human being of one of the greatest things on the planet? How can you deny someone the right to love openly?

Because whether you know it or not, that’s what you’re doing. Every single one of you. You’re denying your fellow human being the right to love and the right to express their love openly- without fear of rejection.

What if the roles were reversed? What if we lived in a world where it was the “norm” to love someone of the same sex? What if you were in love with someone of a different sex, but the rest of us were attempting to pass a bill to deny you of expressing that openly? That’s what you are doing to countless people.

For one thing, all of these videos- they speak of school standards in MASSACHUSETTS- not California, where this law is being passed. Second, that ignorance of the 4,000 voters part in the first video is complete garbage. If an informed voter would just do a little research they’d realize that the Senate did anything but ignore the votes.

Also, in the second video you say that you’re bigoted against for simply disagreeing with a lifestyle or belief (2nd; 2:58). You say that things are no longer a “difference of opinion.” But isn’t that your fault to begin with? You’re trying to pass the bill which makes it illegal for them to practice their “difference of opinion.”

This reminds me of fifty years ago, when people enforced your “difference of opinion” on black rights, or one hundred years ago, when people enforced their “difference of opinion” on women and their rights.

So putting your blatant bigotry aside and putting the fact that you’re using the wrong state to persuade uninformed voters aside, you also just flat-out have your facts wrong. Gay Marriage doesn’t effect religious establishments in any way. I quote,

“...no religion will be required to change it’s religious policies or practices in regard to same-sex couples, and no religious officiant will be required to solemnize a marriage...”

Hold on, I have one more point to argue as far as public schooling goes. Let’s just say that you’re talking about Californian schools here, not Massachusetts schools, and let’s also assume that Californian schools have marriage in their state standards, which they don’t. Let’s assume all of that, yes?

You’re still just flat out wrong. Please, point out one Kindergarten teacher that can reference gay marriage logically in their daily math lesson. As if you didn’t loose any voters by your earlier form of blatant propaganda, you just lost them by comparing marriage to an addition symbol.

Also, “saving” your child’s innocence. What rubbish. How many children do you think call each other “gay” or “faggots” on the playground without even knowing what it means? I’d rather have these children exposed to factual evidence about marriage than this. But again, this means nothing- because the Californian curriculum doesn’t even mention the topic of marriage!

So let’s just do a quick overview.

Voting YES on Proposition 8 does 3 simple things:

  • It restores the definition of marriage to what the vast majority of California voters already approved and what Californians agree should be supported, not undermined. The main point of marriage is the binding of two people who love each other. I don’t see what role sexual orientation plays in it. This bill was never approved- that’s why it lost the first time around.
  • It overturns the outrageous decision of four activist Supreme Court judges who ignored the will of the people.“Ignored.” This just never happened. There is a difference between being ignored and losing.
  • It protects our children from being taught in public schools that “same-sex marriage” is the same as traditional marriage, and prevents other consequences to Californians who will be forced to not just be tolerant of gay lifestyles, but face mandatory compliance regardless of their personal beliefs.Again, the Californian curriculum doesn’t even mention marriage- they leave that to the parents. Notice how Yes on Prop 8 ads focus on Massachusetts curriculum? Mandatory compliance? The bill doesn’t even mention compliance! You’re confusing the public’s response to blatant discrimination with the bill’s statements themselves.

  1. I agree 100%, couldn’t have said it any better myself.

  2. What if the roles were reversed? What if we lived in a world where it was the “norm” to love someone of the same sex? What if you were in love with someone of a different sex, but the rest of us were attempting to pass a bill to deny you of expressing that openly? That’s what you are doing to countless people.

I had that same thought just yesterday.
And I agree one hundred percent.

  3. Agree 100%. The whole thing is bigoted and hateful.

Live and let live. I understand that some people’s religious beliefs say that homosexuality is wrong, but even so, they have no right to tell other people what to do. That’s why the framers of the Constitution created what every fifth grader knows as “separation of church and state”.

These are the same conservatives who say that government should be small. They’re the same ones who say that the government should stay out of people’s daily lives. “What?! Gay people want to get married?! Hey government, go interfere with their daily lives!”

Vote for tolerance, equality and common sense.

    NO on 8.

  4. Thanks for writing it in such an eloquent way. The whole issue pisses me off so much I just rant incoherently whenever I begin to talk about it.

  5. I AGREE WITH YOU 100%!
You put in perfect words its unbelievable.
    Thanks for posting!

  6. You are truly my hero for posting this.

Love is love… When does anyone have the right to tell someone that they cannot marry the one they love?

    Thank You Spencer.

  7. I understand your view on this topic and it is something that is always going to be a debatable subject in our society.

BUT, I really don’t think that it is right of you to judge people who are for Prop 8.

Are world has two views on this topic:

1- Republicans, etc have no heart for equality and that they are all basically discriminating against people of a different sexual orientation

2- Voting No on Prop 8 has no affect on religious practice itself

Many people dont understand the reasons that people do vote Yes on Prop 8. How do you expect a Christian to vote No on this prop, if as a Christian, you are supposed to follow God’s teachings.

Supporters of Prop 8 are NOT discriminating and I kind of find that offensive for you to say that we are and that we dont believe in equality

MARRIAGE is something mentioned many times in the Bible. It is something that has been sacred to us and will always be. God says that marriage should only be between a man and a woman, and by this, you cant expect Christians to vote No on this prop. We look and study the Bible, and God says that marriage is a blessing granted by him, ment to between a man and woman.

ITs fact and its not good to make a general stereotype that all supporters of Prop 8 are voting Yes for the same reasons. Because for many it is a very serious religious decision, and I think that we should do whatever God would want us to do.

Please dont get angry, but I am just informing you that NOT ALL SUPPORTERS OF PROP 8 ARE VOTING YES FOR THE SAME REASONS. Sure some people are just discriminating and thats there problems.
But consider that marriage is something treasured by many Christians.
We got to live our lives with God as our basis, and that includes our political decisions.

  8. Thanks for posting this spencer!
Apple has come out against the proposition aswell as google, but apple doing so is the latest in the news reel. I quote:

“Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.”

Denying people the right to marry is exactly the same as saying white people aren’t allowed to marry, or black people aren’t allowed to.

  9. I think you way ahead of your years, and i can truthfully say you are one of the best guys i’ve met,
you are so loving and funny you always seem to make me smile, thank you for that.

Great writing skills by the way

  10. I don’t really like to get into this issue.
But I’d just like to make one comment. And tell me if I’m misunderstanding.

You wrote: “I still fail to see how this effects you at all. “Protecting the values of marriage,” my ass. How is any of this any different than the civil rights movement? The “separate but equal” bathrooms fifty years ago? It’s still denying your fellow human being of god-given rights.”

I don’t think that Prop 8 can be paralleled with the discrimination that blacks went through. Surpressing gay rights should not be compared slavery and all the heinious acts that go along with it. To do so, is to equate the two; and more over it makes less of what they went through.

Now, I’m not saying that gays aren’t discriminated against. Rather, I’m suggesting that blacks went through a significantly greater amount.

And I’ve lost my train of thought…

  11. 1 John 2:15-17

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

  12. HAHA! i watched that video again

“they’re going to teach about homosexuals in math!”

    bahahahahhhahha
